Many slips and trips in the workplace could be avoided if safety guidelines were strictly followed. Unfortunately, the negligence of an employer or fellow employee can effectively destroy someone’s life in the most serious cases of a slip or trip accident.
The Health and Safety Executive states that one of the main reasons people experience nasty slip and trip accidents is that they don’t take the potential risks seriously. Although a slipping accident, on the surface doesn’t sound as serious as many other types of accident, the fact is many people suffer long-term, life-changing injuries because of them.
Currently, 20% of 3 or more day injuries and absences are caused by workplace slips and trips. 95% of serious slips end up causing broken bones for the victim, whilst an average of two people die due to a nasty slip or trip accident at work.
Workplace slips and trips are not inevitable and can be avoided with the correct training and risk assessment. Such training is the responsibility of the employer and their failure to provide this could make them liable for any work injury claim against them.
There are a number of ways in which a slip or trip at work could happen:
Cleaning – Everyone at a workplace has a responsibility to keep areas clean and tidy to prevent slips and trips. Unfinished mopping of a floor can leave a wet, slippery surface, while trailing wires that have not been suitably placed can present a tripping hazard.
Contamination – Any spillages are classed as contamination. Rainwater, oil, grease, dust and any other material left on a floor can cause it to become slippery or present a tripping hazard.
Flooring – Should be kept dry and cleaned correctly to maintain suitable levels of grip at all times. They should also be maintained to ensure there are no raised or uneven sections.
Footwear – Suitable footwear should be worn at all times. Flat shoes with a sensible heel can drastically reduce the slip risk. In some cases, employers will need to provide specialised anti-slip shoes. In these cases they will be bound by Personal Protective Equipment legislation.
Obstacles – Walkways should be clear of all obstructions, including boxes, containers, wires, bins and any other obstacle that may cause someone to trip. These areas should be kept tidy at all times.
Falls from height are the most common cause of fatal accident at work injury. 58 people died in 2007/2008 after falling from height, whilst in 2008/2009 over 4,000 people suffered a significant injury this way. Approximately one quarter of all serious work injuries are related to ladder falls, making their use the most dangerous form of workplace activity.
Employers have the responsibility to ensure strict safety training is carried out, as well as completing a risk assessment of the task. Work at height should never be carried out in bad weather if outside and only done at a minimum. If there is any alternative to using a ladder, e.g. if existing platforms are available which are suitable for the job, these should be used at all times.
If you have been injured after falling from height whilst completing a job at your workplace or on behalf of an employer, we can help you make a fall from height accident claim.
