Manual Handling Compensation Claims

Most manual handling work involves lifting or carrying, but can also include lowering, pushing or pulling. This type of work can be particularly dangerous if the correct training and safety procedures are not followed, and many workers suffer back or muscle injuries every single year because they have not been adequately trained by their employers.

If you have been injured this way when carrying out your work duties then we can handle any manual handling compensation claims you wish to make. Our dedicated professionalism to our claimants ensures that you are well cared for from the start to finish of your accident claim. Claim Compensation Now.

Manual Handling Injury Claim

Statistics suggest that around 10% of all major workplace injuries stem from manual handling work, whilst a third of all three-day-or-more absences are due to manual handling injuries. Employers should therefore be taking all reasonable steps to minimise the injury risk to their workers.

Manual handling accidents can happen in a range of locations. Most would consider this type of work injury to occur in a warehouse or factory, where heavy lifting is a common workplace task. However, manual handling relates to any work which involves the moving of objects, which can happen in any industry, including construction, agriculture and retail.

Unfortunately, many of the manual handling work accidents that people do suffer happen through no fault of their own. An effective programme of introductory training can reveal the dangers of manual handling to employees and suggest ways of how to combat these, whilst being refreshed on these ideas regularly will help to keep these ideas in the minds of employees.

At PIC Claim we work with a team of work accident compensation solicitors who all have years of experience winning compensation for victims of manual handling accidents. At PIC Claim we can put you in touch with a legal expert completely free of cost to you throughout the duration of your claim.

Manual Handling Health and Safety Regulations

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 were established to ensure the safety of those involved in such work. Although they do not state any particular weight limits which people can carry, they do establish other control measures including:

  • Avoiding hazardous manual handling operations as far as is reasonably practicable, e.g. moving the load mechanically where possible.
  • Carrying out an assessment of the risks involved with the manual handling task ahead when it cannot be avoided.
  • Reduce the risk of injury by providing mechanical assistance, or look at ways to change the task, the load or the working environment.

The HSE suggests an ergonomic assessment to determine the injury risk to employers involved in manual handling work. The task, the individual, the load and the working environment are considered to be the most important factors when considering whether the manual handling task ahead is a safe one to carry out.

Despite a large portion of employers being aware of the risks and carrying out the appropriate assessments, currently around 1.1 million people suffer some sort of musculoskeletal disorders caused by regular work this way. This can have a severe impact on a victim’s quality of life, and this is why claiming manual handling compensation is a right for those who have to live with the consequences.
