It’s estimated that over one million people could be at risk of suffering industrial deafness because of a noisy workplace environment. Although many in this situation may accept this as inevitable, your employer is actually required by law to protect you from the threat hearing damage – as stated within the Noise at Work Regulations 2005. If they have not done so, they may be liable for industrial deafness compensation claims against them.
Personal protective equipment, such as industrial duty ear-defenders should be provided to workers who face working in prolonged noisy environments. As well as this, training should be carried out to ensure they are aware of the dangers they face. This will stop them from carrying out work without adequate protection, therefore not endangering their health in the process.
If you believe that your employer has not done enough to protect you from loud noises, PIC Claim can help get you the industrial deafness compensation you are entitled to. Use our simple online claim form, to contact one of our experienced claims handlers.
Industrial deafness can be caused by exposure to noise over a prolonged period, and sometimes by a particularly loud noise yet in a shorter period of time. The majority of industrial deafness cases related to prolonged exposure are caused by loud machinery or power tools in workplaces such as factories and building sites.
Other examples of prolonged exposure include working in nightclubs, where noise levels typically reach between 95 to 120 decibels. As of 2008, all nightclub owners were required to issue their staff, including bouncers and bar staff with ear plugs to reduce the risks of industrial deafness because of loud music.
Those who are exposed to short outbursts of very loud noise are also at risk of deafness. Soldiers in battle are in particular danger of this, as gun fire and explosions can happen at any time, which can cause anything from temporary to fully permanent hearing loss. The majority of these victims suffer what is known as acoustic trauma, which can cause a range of damage to the inner ear.
There are varying symptoms that can result with industrial deafness. On a shorter term basis, the sufferer may experience difficulties hearing including muffled noises and trouble hearing speech or other audio such as television. More serious symptoms which can last on a permanent basis include tinnitus, which can be a high pitched ringing or buzzing in the inner ear which can cause difficulties with balance as well as sleeping problems.
