Fork Lift Truck Accident Claims

Fork lift trucks are mainly used in construction and industrial environments, including factories and warehouses. Although they are a highly important piece of machinery, if they are not used in the correct way, or in a suitable work environment they can lead to a serious accident with often fatal consequences.

Currently around 10 people are killed on average every single year in fork lift truck accidents, whilst many more suffer serious injuries. 8000 accidents involving a fork lift truck happen every year in the UK. Surprisingly, around two-thirds of these accidents happen to people who are not driving the vehicle themselves. This can include employees in a factory, or even members of the public.

It is vitally important that extensive training is provided by an employer before allowing anyone to use a fork lift truck in an area with people. If this has not happened, it is likely that they will be liable to pay out for any fork lift truck accident claims made for subsequent injuries.

Causes of Fork Lift Truck Accidents

There are a number of ways in which fork lift truck accidents can cause injuries to workers and/or members of the public. Some of these include:

  • Collisions with pedestrians in the area
  • Crashing by driving the vehicle too fast
  • Difficult to see objects obstructing the way of a fork lift truck
  • Fork lift truck toppling over because of an imbalanced load
  • People being crushed by a fork lift truck against another object
  • The vehicle’s load falling off onto a passer-by
  • Toppling or problems stopping because of a surface defect

Employer training must cover all of these points, and more to ensure that anyone who uses a fork lift truck is aware of the potential dangers that are involved. If there are dangers, steps must be taken to reduce them. This could include wearing personal protective equipment such as hard hats, and clothing to increase visibility such as fluorescent jackets.

An employer should ensure that a risk assessment is carried out in the workplace to highlight the potential dangers that those in the immediate area of a fork lift truck face.
