Crane Accident Injury Claims

When a crane accident happens it is usually because the equipment has failed to do its job properly and the weight of the machinery has caused it to collapse. This can cause serious injury or even death to the driver of the crane, but also of people in surrounding property or offices.

Cranes can also drop their heavy load if it has not been appropriately secured. An operator must ensure that the crane is holding the load safely before lifting it to ensure that it does not drop from height and potentially kill or seriously injure those underneath. Full training must be provided by the construction company to ensure that this is the case every time.

Statistics from the USA show that of those involved in crane accidents, over 50% usually end up in fatalities. 197 of 303 accidents in 2009, 217 of 401 in 2008, and 176 of 347 crane accidents in 2007 ended up with at least one fatality in each instance. This is a demonstration of the sheer severity that a multi-tonne crane can in the event that things go wrong.

Crane Accidents and other Work Accident Claims

An employer has a duty of care to ensure that all who are responsible for operating machinery such as cranes are fully trained in how to do so. If they have failed in this duty then they are far more likely to be liable for any crane accident claims against them.

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) Act 1998 makes is designed to make employers and workers aware of the dangers of crane accidents, and stresses the importance training being carried out. It outlines practices and procedures including carrying out regular safety checks and ensuring that load limits are not exceeded.
