Asbestos Compensation

Asbestos is a very harmful substance that can have fatal consequences for anyone exposed to it. Widely used to insulate buildings before the 1970’s, the effects of asbestos exposure are only just surfacing for many in recent years.

There are a number of diseases caused by exposure to asbestos including mesothelioma and asbestosis. If you have developed an asbestos-related illness, we can help you make a claim for asbestos compensation. Claim Compensation Now.

Industrial Illness Asbestos Claim

Asbestos can cause industrial illnesses that, unfortunately, are all too common in the UK. Many asbestos diseases take 20, 30 and sometimes even 40 years to develop. This is why many of the people who worked around or were exposed to asbestos on a regular basis are finding themselves suffering with the symptoms of the disease now.

Although asbestos was a seemingly good, cheap way of insulating buildings, pipes and lofts, its use was quickly stopped when it people began to realise the health dangers that it posed.

Back then health and safety rules were not as tight as they are today and employers did not necessarily assess the risks involved before carrying out certain jobs. This does not mean however that making an asbestos claim is impossible. At PIC Claim we can help you pursue compensation for whatever asbestos illness you may be suffering from, however long ago you were working for the employer that exposed you.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of lung cancer that is strongly associated with exposure to asbestos. It’s most common affect on the body by thickening the lining of the walls on the lungs.

People who have developed mesothelioma have usually breathed in dust particles when they were exposed at work. It is also thought that exposure in other ways, such as washing the clothes of someone working around asbestos could cause the illness.

Early signs of mesothelioma can include shortness of breath, a build up of fluid between the lungs and chest wall causing severe chest pains, as well as a constant feeling of tiredness or fatigue.

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a more chronic disease which develops from within the lungs themselves. Unlike mesothelioma, which is a thickening of the pleural lining, asbestosis actually causes scarring of the tissue inside the lungs.

It is more associated with long-term or intense exposure to asbestos dust particles. This means that nearly all cases of asbestosis are caused by working in close proximity to the substance over a lengthy period of time.

Symptoms of asbestosis include severe shortness of breath or dyspnea. This can even go as far as complete respiratory failure in the worst of cases.

Pleural Plaques

Pleural plaques are the most common illness associated with asbestos exposure. They are a build up of collagen deposits that form on the inside of the diaphragm and occasionally near the ribcage.

The illness rarely develops unless someone has had close contact with asbestos and the symptoms usually begin to show after 20 or so years. Unlike mesothelioma and asbestosis, pleural plaques can be medically treated – but not fully cured.

Pleural plaques alone are not currently compensable. However this has been a cause of much controversy in recent times. Critics argue that although pleural plaques are not life threatening, they can lead to further, incurable diseases such as mesothelioma, which have a severe detrimental effect on the victim’s life.

Pleural Thickening

This is when fluid builds up in the chest cavity. If caught early enough it can be treated, however if unnoticed the build up can cause breathing difficulties.

As with pleural plaques, the early signs of pleural thickening usually mean that a person has experienced exposure to asbestos. This means that a more serious illness could develop in the future, which is a risk to someone’s health.
